News and Notes

Big Little Book Sale – We just finished cataloging about 300 original BLBs that I have for sale, circa 1933-1980. A 3-page ad will run in the next Big Little Times this December. This is the twice-yearly publication put out by The Big Little Book Club (http://www.biglittlebooks.com/club.html). Membership is $20 a year. If you have an interest in seeing the list, call my partner Anne at 530-273-9762 or send an email to Hutchisonbooks@mac.com. Prices run from about $15 up, in all conditions, and this covers the spectrum from Andy Panda, Dick Tracy and Donald Duck, to Flash Gordon, Green Hornet, Little Orphan Annie and King of the Royal Mounted. And Red Ryder, Tarzan, Terry and the Pirates, etc. Also movie-tie-ins. Even some of the unusual BLBs from offbeat publishers, like the rare Laughing Dragon of Oz ($200) and the one-and-only Captain Marvel ($100).

Here are a few photos we took on our book trip to Houston and Boston in early November. You’ll note one with me holding a sign. Look closely and you’ll see it reads “Graphic and Novelty Books.” This is how someone at the Houston Printing Museum defined what we carry. I was asked to do a talk with two other booksellers, Peter Stern from Peter Stern Rare Books in Boston, and Dennis Milhouse, from First Folio in Paris, Tennessee. This was my table-top sign which they made up to keep us straight for the audience.

I got a kick out of them apparently abbreviating Graphic Novels down to “Graphic” and I don’t know WHERE the “Novelty” came from. Maybe because we have Pop-Up books? Comics? Oh, well.

The talk went well and we recalled our beginnings in the book field, our favorite ”fish story” of the book or collection that got away, where we see the rare book business going over the next few years. Ken Sanders spoke after we did, something about “What is a Rare Book.” Not a subject of his choosing, he decided to wing it and apparently did okay. Ken is one of the book experts on the Antiques Road Show, when he’s not running his store in Salt Lake City.

The other three photos here are from the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair. My partner Anne is smiling from the corner of our booth, then here’s two of some of our books for sale. You may note the Li’l Abner Board Game (1946, $150), which I had just found at the “shadow” show that morning. I also found there several Lynd Ward books. Two sold immediately but we still have Wild Pilgrimage ($400), one of his scarcest woodcut novels.

There’s also the uncommon Moebius: Made in L.A. ($250) and a very rare little treat, Moebius’ Viamor, a leatherbound limited edition, signed from 100 for the U.S. and 200 for Europe ($1000). Also a 1930s Mickey Mouse Stories and some circa 1946 Little Lulu books ($85 or so), a Rockwell Kent print, A Midsummer’s Night Dream signed by Charles Vess ($125)…all still available. Sales were slow there, although we sure had some great books—one of our best selections ever, I feel.

We’ll have them and much more in February for the Pasadena Book Fair and the Oakland International Book Fair, if we don’t sell them online first. Anne is also putting together a Christmas email list of similar books. Ask to get on her list for very occasional email “catalogs.” We’re still going through a massive collection put together by my late employee and friend, Paul Blair. He collected books that we handled back into the early 1980s, as well as some well-picked early illustrated books by the likes of W. Russell Flint and Norman Lindsay.

Just in, too late to describe: Walter Baumhofer (from Illustration Press), the huge Taschen book 75 Years of Marvel, and Art of Greg Spalenka Deluxe, Signed Edition.
