It looks like this is now sold out from the publisher. We only got four copies of our 10-copy order, but we have a late-arriving box so we hope to get the other six. As I mentioned in the description, it looks like ALL copies may have the minor flaw of the slipcase color cover plate being slightly wavy. Perhaps that is why they produced a full box to enclose it in—we've never seen a slipcased book INSIDE its own box before! Or they added the box so that they could include the portfolio of extra items, which clearly would not fit within the slipcase. That's very classy!

COMPLETE JUNIOR AND SUNNY --By Al Feldstein. Compiled by Grant Geissman.
Recommended. Headlight Comics from 1947-48. Although the stories are basically charming, "typical teenage" period pieces, Feldstein's artwork often pushes the envelope for the time, with titillating covers and often-suggestive images in the stories themselves. It's probably a good thing that Dr. Fredric Wertham never found out about Junior and Sunny! Seduction of the innocent, indeed!

FELDSTEIN The Mad Life and Fantastic Art of Al Feldstein! --By Grant Geissman.
Highly Recommended. In the opinion of many comic book aficionados, the greatest comics ever created were those published in the 1950s by Bill Gaines at EC Comics. Gaines's creative right-hand man at EC was Al Feldstein, a triple threat artist/writer/editor. And after EC was forced by various guardians of morality to drop their comics in the mid-1950s, Feldstein shepherded Mad Magazine into a cultural icon.

News and Notes

Our Half-Price Calendar Sale just went out Tuesday, February 1, so there is still time to catch a bargain or two. We had some 26 orders the first day!

The January Clearance email was sent January 26th. We still have nearly every title. See that email (with 80 items) or look on our home page for our entire Closeouts selection. It's in the right hand NAV bar, under Closeouts, then broken down by category.

A few short reviews this week, of three books that I have greatly enjoyed reading.

Illustrated by Lynd Ward
[ILLWA. $55.00] I surely wish this wasn't so expensive--$55 for a 160-page softcover. But that said, as a fan of Lynd Ward myself, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a copy. This is the first-ever bibliography of his work, listing in detail (with many illustrations) 246 books with illustrations over his long career. But the first 64 pages are also the first biography of the man, who is most famous for creating the wordless novel in America (he was inspired by Franz Masereel and his woodcut novels in Germany, in the 1920s).

Ward created God's Man in 1929, and its popularity quickly inspired him to follow up with Madmen's Drum (1930), Wild Pilgrimage (1932), Prelude to a Million Years (1933), Song Without Words (1936), Vertigo (1937) and posthumously in 2001, the unfinished Lynd Ward's Last Unfinished Wordless Novel. We actually handled this, limited to just 125 copies!

Lynd married May McNeer and worked on many children's books with her. He also had a 43-year association with George Macy and his Limited Editions Club, which produced finely printed, signed and limited volumes for decades. He also did jacket covers, and even more wood engraved work over his long and prolific career.

Sandman Overture
By J.H. Williams and Dave Stewart, written by Neil Gaiman [SAMOH. $24.99 $21.99]. After more than 20 years, Gaiman returns to create a new full-length story in his best-selling Sandman series. When it first appeared, it changed forever the way comics were told. The Sandman series blazed new paths, created an entire universe that spawned many spin-offs, and brought into the comics world many non-comics readers, especially women. Here Neil goes back and creates a backstory, a prelude, which explains some of the questions left unanswered in the Sandman series.

"He is known throughout Creation by countless names. Anywhere that life exists, he and his seven ageless siblings guide the forces that shape it.. He is Dream of the Endless. The year is 1915. And the universe is about to end.

"Graceful yet teaming with detail, Williams' visuals—including his off-kilter, organic layouts—are perfectly matched with Gaiman's kaleidoscopic script."

This so inspired me, I went back and have been reading the entire series—discovering in the process I'd missed some portions of it. What a pleasure to rediscover it.

Where Monsters Dwell
By Garth Ennis, Russ Braun and Frank Cho [WMD01. $14.99]. This is such a weird book, made even more confusing by Marvel's strange titles. It has "Secret Wars" and "Warzones" slapped on the cover—I sure don't know what this relates to, nor do I really care. The title, for you old timers like me, sounds just like an old Lee and Kirby monster title—or story—from the sixties. It's not that either.

And finally, it "stars" The Phantom Eagle. He was a long-running flyer who began as a teen-ager in World War II, lying about his age and enlisting in the RAF in Great Britain. He appeared in Fawcett's Wow Comics, the title in which Mary Marvel made her home in the 1940s. He ran as a back up feature from #6 in 1942 to the final issue, #69, in 1948. He was often drawn by the renowned Marc Swayze, one of the creators of Mary Marvel and a frequent artist on Captain Marvel.

He next appears as an unrelated World War I hero created by writer Gary Friedrich and artist Herb Trimpe in Marvel Super-Heroes #16 in Sept, 1968. He bounced around in a handful off offbeat titles, including Ghost Rider, until disappearing again after 1980.

Now he's back in his World War I incarnation, flying a biplane in the South Pacific after the war. He picks up a mysterious and quite beautiful girl for a ride to another island, and they are suddenly flip-flopped into another dimension, a world full of flying reptiles, where they fall into a society of tall, beautiful Amazons, with not a male in sight. Of course, that's where our boy Frank Cho comes in, to draw the covers and co-plot the story in this five-issue series, collected herein.

Our Phantom Eagle turns out to be far from a hero here—in fact he's rather a lout. The real star is Clementine, the lady who chartered a ride and turns out to be much, much more than he—and the reader—can ever have imagined. She's a wonderful piece of work and a lot of fun, as she takes over this loopy but fun story.
