SIMON & KIRBY LIBRARY SUPERHEROES -- Simon and Kirby. Introduction by Neil Gaiman.
Highly Recommended. Simon and Kirby are the dynamic duo who set the standard for comic stories and art from 1940 to 1961. Their creation Captain America remains one of the most famous heroes in comic book history, and their work for Timely and DC Comics set new standards in dynamic, two-fisted storytelling. This presents a huge library-- almost 500 pages--of their finest non-DC, non-Marvel collaboration: Stuntman, The Black Owl, Fighting American, Pvt. Strong, The Fly, and more....More.

We brought this back into stock to compliment the other three S&K Library titles now in available, with the release of Crime last week. This collects scarce stories done both before and directly after S&K went to work for Timely and created Captain America, and then for DC, creating The Boy Commandos, and taking over The Sandman and Manhunter in Adventure Comics.

This is a great series and a good way to enjoy these early stories. See last week's email for the other titles or see our website for more Simon & Kirby.

THE PHANTOM: The Complete Series: The Charlton Years Volume 3 -- By Joe Gill. Art by Pat Boyette.
Recommended. Collects #49-56, 1972-73. Twenty-four complete stories (3 per issue) that are a lot of fun. Pat Boyette is an unsung but excellent artist. He wasn't slick or polished, but he had a fine ability to TELL a story, picking the right scenes to illustrate. To me, that fits perfectly with the usually pared-down style of the Phantom, in keeping with the first artists doing the newspaper strips. Also here is an interview with creater Lee Falk....More.

THE PHANTOM: The Complete Series: The Charlton Years Volume 2 -- By Pat Boyette.
Highly Recommended. 1970-71. Pat Boyette was a natural storyteller--especially gothic tales drenched in lifeblood drawn from a magical, supernatural, and horror vein. Hailing from the Milton Caniff/Noel Sickles/Alex Toth tradition, laid his own macabre patina over their gold standard of comics storytelling.

This is THE book on this superb comics artist. Another book on Buscema was produced by Vanguard in late 2010. But this book is twice the number of pages, just to begin with. News and Notes

I'm down south in San Diego as I write this (Tuesday, June 22). We just spent all day, which began at 5:00 a.m., setting up at the Comic-Con. All things went well—except, a very big EXCEPT--my partner Anne tripped over our 10-foot long "Bud Plant Comic Art" sign made of metal and wood. She fell backward, landing first on her hand on the concrete floor, breaking her wrist. Tough way to get out of helping at the show! Anne’s been an amazing trooper about the whole thing, keeping a great attitude. Surgery was completed just minutes ago, just before midnight.

Fortunately, we brought plenty of help this year: LaDonna and Diane, whom many of you know from calling your orders in, and my sister Carolyn who's working her very first San Diego. She helps me at Emerald City and at small, local shows in Sacramento. So we'll make it happen, although we'll miss Anne a lot. Lucky for us, she lived here in San Diego for 30 years (before I swept her off her feet in 2002 and got her to move up to Grass Valley) so she has very good friends here to help out while she recuperates.

We already picked up one interesting item: The Alexander Gallery Frank Frazetta hardbound catalog, published some years ago now. The last one I sold was in the $300 range, quite a few years ago now...it's pretty scarce. But we bought eleven copies and can get a few more from him, so I'm going to price it at $200 or $225. We'll list in two weeks, after we get back, along with many new sketchbooks and other items from the show.

I didn't have time to edit the new item descriptions this week, so please forgive us if they are a bit funky. We just used what the publishers provided us. I'll write more about each item and add recommendations when I get back to Grass Valley next week.

Walking Your Octopus: A Guidebook to the Domesticated Cephalopod  was one of our very favorite books in 2013, one that even non-fans and people young and old fell in love with. We spoke recently to Brian Kesinger, whose resume includes currently working for Disney. He's doing a follow-up book, Traveling with Your Octopus and we look forward to seeing this fall or early winter.

Will Eisner's The Spirit Artist's Edition Volume 2 - This was one of the earlier Artist's Editions. And for us, one of the most popular (after the Wally Wood's EC Stories, currently out of print). I'm very pleased to see another of these, more complete stories from the 1946-on era, considered the peak of the Eisner Studio's finest work. We'll announce it soon, but you can call now and get one reserved [WETS02H. $150]. Volume 1 is still available [WETSH. $150].

Genius Animated: The Cartoon Art of Alex Toth went out of print with a week or two of publication! A new edition is currently slated for September 30. It never made it into a catalog as our initial stock sold out.

Also sold out is The Art of Japanese Monsters which went out of print immediately after publication. We may get a few more hardcover copies after a Godzilla fest the publisher is attending. Otherwise, a softcover edition is scheduled for September. Inquire.

Reviews:

The Happy Warrior: The Life Story of Sir Winston Churchill

When a true story is told in comic or graphic novel format, it can be not only entertaining and exciting, but informative. I recently raved here about my reading of SHOWA: A History of Japan by Shigeru Mizuki. I was amazed at how much I learned about a foreign society, from their perspective.

Well, here is another fine entry in the field of documentary and yet captivating comics. As an American citizen, I know very little of Churchill, aside from him leading England throughout World War II. I knew he was as beloved there as FDR was here in the U.S.

This corrects my ignorance. The son of an English Lord, he could have had a safe, protected place in society. Instead, he was gung ho about being in the service from the beginning of his manhood. Born in 1875, he raced off to one war after another, helping the Spanish fight rebels in Cuba, fighting in India, in the Boer War in South Africa. He was also a war correspondent and reporter, writing two books about his battle experiences.

Captured and a prisoner in South Africa, he came very close to being shot by a firing squad. As a war correspondent he could not participate in the battle. But that is exactly what he was doing. By World War I, he was appointed to the Admiralty, in charge of the British Navy. He made his mistakes, which this is pretty honest about, and was in and out of office for the next decades. But always the stalwart patriot, he came out against Hitler before most people realized what a threat he was. And by the time Hitler attacked England, Churchill was the Prime Minister.

He led his embattled country through six years of war, and for most of that time England was taking one loss after another.

Allies, like the French, surrendered; allies like Greece, Norway, Denmark, and finally all of North Africa fell to the Germans. The English Army was pushed into the sea at Dunkirk--Churchill was instrumental is rescuing them with the largest sea rescue ever attempted. The U.S. was very late to finally join the battle, not until almost 1942. England was being bombed into oblivion beginning in 1940. Yet he was convinced they could win. And he was right. He inspired the population with brilliant speeches and unyielding determination, not to mention bravery under fire and a willingness to fly on dangerous missions to talk personally with Roosevelt and others as the war was in progress.

And all this appeared in a boy's weekly comic, Eagle, not long after the war, in 1957-58. Beautifully drawn by Frank Bellamy, who made Dan Dare the household name in England. Eagle was consider the premier weekly, no expense spared to present the best story and art available.

The very detailed, highly informative introduction by CBE Richard Langworth takes this weekly comics page very, very seriously. He looks critically, pointing out its strengths and a few oversights. But still giving it high marks--and adding a lot to our understanding of the story with additional details. Wonderful work!

American Comic Book Chronicles 1965-69

This volume tackles the latter half of the sixties. Marvel was improving on and expanding the stable of heroes that have lasted right up to today. DC was putting out the occasional brilliant comic, while slowly realizing they were slowly losing, to Marvel, the market dominance they'd enjoyed for 25 years. The old guard there considered Marvel comics "bad art."

Upstarts like Tower (Thunder Agents), ACG, even Dell were getting into the superhero game. And TV and movie adaptations still proliferated, plus war comics, romance, humor, and Archie titles. Dark Shadows, The Beatles, and The Monkees had their own titles! Berni Wrightson and other young talents began to break into the formerly closed world of pro comics. Gil Kane's independent title His Name is Savage attempted, like Warren, to break out of the comics mold with sexual and violent content in a magazine format.

Also Marvel's Pussycat and a Spider-Man magazine with graphic novel-length stories, that lasted but two issues. Wonder Woman got a new look. The Silver Surfer got his own title, with art by John Buscema. In 1968, Marvel's eight-issues-a-month contract ended and the first issues came out of The Sub-Mariner, The Hulk, Capt. America, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, even Captain Marvel. Charlton, with Dick Giordano, Steve Ditko and friends created some wonderful secondary heroes: The Blue Beetle, Judo Master, The Peacekeeper, Nightshade, The Question. So did Web of Horror, Shock, and finally Vampirella in 1969.

Underground comics were getting started and this discusses and illustrates those. Even comics "fanzines" were getting more professional, such as Graphic Story World, Alter Ego and especially Witzend. Steranko burst into the comics scene with Shield and Captain America, and some rare appearances in other Marvel titles.

Neal Adams kicked off his career at DC, and then on the X-Men before it was cancelled for a short time! And can you believe it, Arnold Drake and Gene Colan created The Guardians of the Galaxy-considered a flop, it didn't reappear until the 1970s. And today it's a summer blockbuster.

Again, coverage is very wide-ranging, looking at minor titles as well as major ones. I grew up collecting every comic I could afford during this time (I was 12 in 1965) and yet once again there is a lot here I've either forgotten or just didn't know. There are great anecdotes and quotes from artists that enhance the coverage. And hundreds and hundreds of color reproductions of panels and splash pages and covers. Nothing with this amount of detail has ever before been done on our world of comics, and my hat is off to them for its outstanding coverage. It's hard to put it down. I also strongly recommend the previous 1960s volume, and the 1950s (in one volume) by Bill Schelly.
