There's something for everyone this week. A new Pogo, the fun Bob Powell's Cave Girl, a cool Mars Attacks special edition. Two new Marvel Epic collections--I like these, they are affordable with 18-20 issue runs from Marvel's beginnings--perfect for veteran fans and/or for the kids and grandkids who've been turned on by the Marvel movies. Disney During World War II is the best-ever book on the subject. And don't miss William Mortensen's American Grotesque. Charles, my buddy here in town who's an animation professional was practically jumping up and down about it. I'm eager to dig in. But first I'm just finishing The Secret History of Wonder Woman, which gets better and better--and stranger! I had to put it aside for our Houston and Boston Book Fairs, which I'm just back from--more on those in News and Notes.

There is still lots of time to order and receive Christmas gifts. Nearly all 2015 calendars remain available. There are some fun items in our Clearance section (see Closeouts in the sidebar on our website) and in the latest Half-Price Sale, both a click away. Just Arrived will always feature the very latest new and unusual items, many of which make outstanding and offbeat gifts.

News and Notes

Some major new items just came in, too late to include above: Spectrum Volume 21 both HC and SC, Frank Cho’s new book on Drawing Beautiful Women in three different editions ($19.95, $29.95 and $150 GIANT limited edition). Also the much anticipated Complete Zap Set, The Complete Far Side, Alice’s Wonderland, and The Collector’s Book of Virgil Finlay. They’ll all be detailed next week.

Watch for our Cybersale of 60 more on-sale items, in a special email on December 1.

Scott Gustafson's Classic Bedtime Stories flew out of here and we're waiting for more. I've been asked if this is new, and it IS. It's deceptive, because the Jack and the Beanstalk cover was also done as a Greenwich Workshop print, so it looks familiar, at least to me., But this is an entirely new book, companion to his Classic Fairy Tales and Mother Goose collections. This comes with a signed bookplate, too.

I wrote a long, chatty report on the two Antiquarian Book Fairs that Anne and I just exhibited at, Houston and Boston. I wrote it on the Southwest flight back from Boston on Monday, Nov 17. But somehow it disappeared from my IPad, still don't know why.

In brief, then...I wish I could say both shows were exceptional, but customers were very conservative with their purchases, not just with us but for many other dealers. We have a wonderful stock of new acquisitions of rare books right now, thanks in part to the collection of our former employee Paul Blair, who collected not only our material beginning in the 1980s, but also classic illustrated books.

But additionally, in Houston, my good friend and book scouting buddy Oscar Graham had just bought a small collection of exceptionally rare illustrated books. So I bought several of these, a few for myself and several to take to Boston. For instance, W. Russell Flint's Morte d'Athur, four volumes in boards with 48 color plates, 1911. And Flint's oversized Drawings, in a jacket AND signed, very unusual. And a rare, perfect Jessie Willcox Smith in jacket, The Princess and the Goblin. And Edward Detmold's first edition of Life of the Bee, in the original box.

For myself, I bought L. Frank Baum's Navy Alphabet, a book I'd never actually examined before, from very early in his writing career. After the show I made my annual trek to Houston's Bedrock City Comics. I spent the entire day day Sunday going through their vintage comics, including two new collections of pre-code horror and good-girl comics. It was fun, even better because owner Richie Evans had time to visit. He proudly showed Ken Sanders and me his latest acquisition: the original art to Action Comics #15, August 1939. It's by artist Fred Guardineer and just the fifth Superman cover! And the earliest original art for an Action/Superman cover in existence. Wow!

We flew on to Boston Monday, Nov 10, ready for a full week of book scouting and then the Boston Book Fair over the weekend. As usual there was lots to be found in the local stores. I collect old trade bindings (c. 1850-1930) with cool covers and there were a fair number at low prices. And I stumbled onto the surprisingly rare Blondie From A to Z, from 1943, in jacket. Based on the Blondie and Dagwood strips, this features wartime-era rhymes for each letter, with jokes about rationing, fighting, you-name-it, with the usual politically incorrect racial stuff. Still, looks like Chick Young's style, and a lot of fun. But I can see why it was never reprinted! This might be one of the best copies in existence. My internet search turned up just one other, without a jacket. Who would have thought?

Well, we need to get this Eblast finished so I'll keep it brief. My best wishes to you that you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. ~ Bud
