POGO Volume 3: Evidence to the Contrary -- By Walt Kelly.
Highly Recommended. The Complete Syndicated Comic Strips Including Color Sundays. It's in this volume (featuring another two years' worth of Pogo strips) that we meet one of Walt Kelly's boldest political caricatures. Folks across America had little trouble equating the insidious wildcat Simple J. Malarkey with the ascendant anti-Communist senator, Joseph McCarthy. Mature Viewers

This week we have just one DVD, but it's a doozy. There's quite a story behind it. Come Play With Me is a Naughty Nurse escapade starring the 1970s British model and sex queen, Mary Millington. There's also a bevy of other film magazine models and at least two ladies not usually caught in the dark waters of soft-core films.

COME PLAY WITH ME DVD -- Mary Millington, Britain's undisputed 70's sex queen, stars as the leader of 20 horny girls who take over the running of a remote health farm. Their naughty-nurse fitness treatments are wild. When a pair of bungling forgers try to hide out there, the movie climaxes (pun intended) with a no-holds-barred orgy would make Caligula blush! News and Notes

Our ability to load new items onto our website was impaired for almost a full week, but it's now back to normal. I mentioned in last week's Half Price Sale to see Just Arrived on our home page, but indeed, there was very little new until a couple of days ago when we got this repaired. So take a look, and you'll also find more new items that were just too many to squeeze in this week.

I really like the new Taschen Art of the Pin-Up and just selected an image to use for our next catalog. Meanwhile, if you don't have our latest catalog with the cover by Leo and Diane Dillon (the undersea woman in green), you can find it on the website and order one free with your order, or just call and ask for one. The next catalog will be out in early December.

Some calendars are starting to sell out. The DC Bombshells and Women of Marvel calendars have both gone OP, though we may have copies left if you move quickly. Some adult titles are going fast, too, so check out the assortment before it's too late for your favorite.

We'll have an announcement about the upcoming Robert McGinnis book next week, and we will be offering a very reasonably priced deluxe edition. We also just got in deluxe signed editions of all the latest Titan art books, such as Ian Miller, Jim Burns, John Harris, Drew Struzan, etc. Also the wonderful Tarzan Centennial. Watch Just Arrived for all of these to be listed in just the next few days.

I had a marvelous time at the recent Oklahoma Alliance of Fans comic con in Oklahoma City…just last weekend, October 25-26. Here's a brief report I did for an online blog: You can see photos from last year current here (http://oafcon2014.blogspot.com/). And I expect new photos will be posted before long. It was a GREAT show. Since I had a table AND I had a lot of ground to cover looking for goodies for my collection, I didn't get time to check out the handful of contemporary comics artists and new publications there. I was focused on finding Golden Age and Silver age comics for my collection, and offbeat collectibles that I NEVER see elsewhere, even at the big shows. But I did pick up a new EC Fanzine by Roger Hill, and a new pulp collection edited by John Wooley, which you will be seeing on the site shortly.

I was very happy with several stacks of great material I came home with: comics and pulps from Eric Groves, from Roger Hill killer old fanzines and a very rare set of Motion Picture Funnies covers from 1939, from Dave Karlen a painted Italian Phantom cover and four pages of unpublished Bible splash pages by a Filipino artist from an aborted DC project in 1981, and bright, higher grade DC's from the early 1960s from Rick Payne, who besides selling his own collection always has real offbeat treasures. I got five 1940s Sirocco statues of comics characters, advertising cards for 1930s magazines, Arcade ads for 1948 Lone Ranger cards that sold in machines for 2 cents each.

I totally neglected my own table on the first day in my quest for stuff. I was there in part to give away my catalogs and sell some older comics and fanzines, and new sketchbooks. Sunday turned out to be my best day, as I stuck around a bit more and towards the end had a flurry of activity selling old comics.

One of the show highlights is Buddy Saunders' new book, authorized by ERB Inc, a new story of John Carter and Tarzan...on Mars. It's a super-deluxe edition beginning at $200, and he sold 20 or so at the show. Only he's selling it. He won't even make it available to myself or to Diamond. It's beautifully illustrated by Mike Hoffman, Tom Grindberg and others, in full color. I'll link to his website in a future news and notes, or you can just Google his name + Burroughs and probably find it.

And of course there was talking and sharing with old friends I've known since 1969...that is still the highlight. Bart, Bill Schelly, Buddy Saunders, Roger Hill, Michelle Nolan, Roy Bonario, Robert Brown, Troy, Cat, Steve, Ike, the list goes on and on. It's my favorite show, bar none. There's nothing like it for both seeing old friends and finding an amazing amount of cool material considering there's only some 60 tables there.

It's the only show where dealers/fans bring and display their own collections for show-and-tell. Ike had original Dick Tracy pages and much more, Troy had a never-before-seen Frazetta/Williamson Buster Crabbe page, the finest I have ever seen, and a portfolio of amazing work, Robert Brown brought rare old lobby cards and movie posters. Jerry Weist once brought in a huge stack of cover roughs by the sci-fi artist Emsh, for all his 1950s paperback covers. Roger Hill the same year brought an original Haunt of Fear Ingels cover that it took him decades to finally score.

It's a fan-oriented show with no equal, at least that I know of.

~ Bud
