ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 6 -- Written and drawn by Dick Briefer.
Recommended. Collects Frankenstein #16-21, 1948-52. Writer/Artist Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein is widely regarded as being America’s first ongoing horror series. Indeed, it was Briefer’s work that probably caused the creature to be actually named as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley’s novel. Splitting the stories between two stools—humor and horror—Briefer’s tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts. Some of the humorous material has already been reprinted, though not necessarily in order nor in total. Until now, of course!....More.

LONE WOLF AND CUB Omnibus 7 -- By Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. Cover by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley.
Our Highest Recommendation
Yagyu Retsudo will stop at nothing to kill Itto Ogami--even sending his last child and only daughter to kill the Lone Wolf while keeping the vendetta quiet. And if his daughter can't finish the job quietly, Retsudo is prepared to take his feud public and offer a reward for Itto that should have every bounty hunter, ronin, and peasant out for Itto's head! Anne Bachelier
Illustrated Limited Editions

The publisher had to move their warehouse and offered us a special buy we could not resist. We have never before handled the Oz or Phantom of the Opera books. We did carry the Alice some years ago, and sales were very brisk, surprising for an artist then new to us. Anne's very special work, and the fine printing and materials involved, make these editions rare delights.

WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ -- By L. Frank Baum. Art by Anne Bachelier.
Recommended. For well over a century, Baum’s tale of Dorothy’s adventures in the land of Oz have been enchanting and delighting millions of people around the world. Now, celebrated French artist Anne Bachelier has brought her brilliant and insightful vision to this beloved classic. In 30 elegant, fantastic watercolor and mixed-media paintings, she brings Oz to vibrant life. Dorothy is as young, innocent, and cheerful as you remember, the Scarecrow seems both graceful and clumsy at the same time, the Tin Woodman conveys his tragic heartless condition, and her Lion –- with his startling white coat –- is the essence of cowardly. And Bachelier’s Emerald City is a dreamlike, fantasy gem.....More.

Mature Readers

Four new items this week: Katabasis is a graphic novel and art book--it's tasteful and technically fine art, but because of the abundant nudity we've put it here.

Inner City Romance compiles Clay Caldwell's seminal underground comics, along with contemporary and later paintings that show a gifted artist tackling life in the inner city (he used to sell his material on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, near my old Comics & Comix store).

And two more warehouse finds, both bargain priced: Jonvelle is a classy book of nude photography. In fact, when we first began selling nude photography, one of our initial collections was a thin softcover from Taschen on Jonvelle. This is a full-sized coffee table book.

And last is Gauntlet. Peter Hsu's very adult comic--turned graphic novel--was wildly popular twenty-some years ago. His polished airbrush style emulated the best of Wally Wood's work, from sexy naked ladies to warring elves and even monsters from other dimensions. Wild stuff, and because we found a lot of copies, we've priced it low.
As always on these warehouse finds, please note copies are not as-new, mint. They are nearly so, but sometimes have minor corner dents or scuff, or occasionally a small tear in the jacket.

INNER CITY ROMANCE -- By Guy Colwell.
Guy Colwell's Inner City Romance trod new territory for underground comix, filled with stories about prison, black culture, ghetto life, the sex trade, and radical activism. It portrayed the unpleasant realities of life in the inner city, where opportunities were limited and being on the lowest rung of the economic ladder meant that one's vision of the American dream was more about survival than lifestyle choices. A retrospective of this French photographer’s black & white photographs of beautiful, partially clothed or nude women, with a natural sexiness not often seen in modern erotic photography. It covers his 1983 - 1999 years, and contains famous portraits and nudes which made him a star in France, Germany and Japan. “...captures that sense of mystery, natural allure, and spontanety of sensual women.” Mature Readers....More.

THE GAUNTLET -- By Peter Hsu.
Warehouse Find, 1992. The artist quite successfully channels Wally Wood and Wood’s elfish fantasies, but here with explicit sex and nudity. Here is some of Peter Hsu’s best highly detailed airbrush (tonal) artwork. Adventures in space and time, carnal voluptuous girls carry on with warriors or with one another (and they all shave down there, for total exposure). Hsu’s career began in Warren’s 1984 and Hellrazor. Here he’s off on his own wild sci-fi and sex fantasy in a thick, 220-page collection. Adult Material....More.

News and Notes

I neglected to give you advance notice on our upcoming shows this time. This weekend, January 31-February 1, Anne and I will be in at the Pasadena Antiquarian Book Fair

The next week, February 6-8, we'll be in Oakland, California for the annual ABAA International Antiquarian Book Fair (it has moved across the bay from San Francisco)

On March 1st I'll be back in Sacramento, but at a new location, for the 4x yearly Sac-Con comic book show. It has moved from the Scottish Rites Temple to McClelland Conference Center, off Highway 80 and Watt Avenue. Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is one of the guests.

I've just decided NOT to exhibit at Emerald City Comic-Con nor at the Vintage Paperback Book Show, both in March. A huge, 70 foot tall oak toppled over during a windstorm on December 30 and destroyed both our Prius and our 3-car garage roof. We store material and shelving for our shows in that garage. Nothing inside was damaged, but the roof is shot. We have to empty all the contents out and into a storage container as the roof is rebuilt, and I felt I couldn't reasonably deal with that and the shows, too. I should be back next year.

The good news is this change of plans will allow me to exhibit at the Sacramento Book Fair on March 28th, which overlapped with Emerald City this year. This twice-annual fair is really a lot of fun, you should try and make it if you are in the area.

~ Bud
