AL WILLIAMSON'S EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Artist's Edition -- Highly Recommended. By Archie Goodwin.Al Williamson's career is crammed full of amazing accomplishments: star artist for the EC Comics line while barely in his twenties, drawing the definitive comic-book version of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, producing the X-9: Secret Agent Corrigan comic strip for 10 years, plus many more! Until seeing this original artwork, I didn't realize how finely detailed this is, very much in his EC style! This is legendary among fans. His heroic adventure style was perfectly suited for Star Wars--Williamson was George Lucas' first choice for the Star Wars newspaper comic strip, which he would later go on to draw!...More.

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 9 -- Closeout Price! Collects #53-58, 1957. Highly Recommended. By Harry Lazarus, John Rosenberger, Ogden Whitney et al Editor Richard Hughes never lacked for good solid stories in his titles, not depending on shock and horror like other publishers. So when the comics code came long, he merely tweaked things a little and went on creating outstanding little tales (much like Lee, Kirby & Ditko would do later on) that today are still very readable, often offbeat. I find them very entertaining--there's time travel, alien invasions, pirates, paranormal events, ghosts, even westerns with a supernatural twist.....More.

Weird, mysterious and spine-tingling tales from ACG's flagship title that kicked off horror comics in 1948. No records exist of who wrote what, but we know the excellent Richard Hughes, along with being editor, wrote many of these offbeat tales. Mature Readers

Two DVDs this week. Sorceress stars Julie Strain and Linda Blair in this new release of a 1994 horror classic by director Jim Wynorski. It includes extra features, director’s comments, et al.

And back in stock is a classic, Gwendoline DVD. One of our bestsellers, this stars vixen Tawny Kitaen in her movie debut as the virgin adventuress. She must endure scorching torments of the desert and steamy jungles--and the warrior women of Yik Yak? French sex kitten Zabou co-stars. A cult classic directed by Just Jaeckin (Emmanuelle, The Story Of O). Includes Dr. Kinsey’s interview with John Willie, creator of Sweet Gwendoline, upon which this is loosely based.

We also keep that book, Sweet Gwendoline, in stock, and are one of the only sources for it these days. The publisher doesn’t make them available to most bookstores, Diamond or Amazon. We’ve kept this amazingly popular title on hand since it was first published in 1972. This is a 368-page expanded edition, published in 1999. [Sweet Gwendoline ADVH. $65, your price $39.95].

News and Notes

2017 Calendars are beginning to arrive, but with so many other new items to list, they may not get into an email for a few weeks. We just got the Boris and Julie Bell, Haunted Realms, Angel Spirits by Sulamith Wulfing, and two from Kinuko Y. Craft: Women of Enchantment and Beauty and the Beast. Watch the website for new titles.
Patrick J. Jones has a first-ever collection of his work coming out this fall. A regular in Spectrum, we've become big fans of his. He has generously agreed to provide us with a special painting for a full color bookplate, and he will be signing these to go along with his upcoming book. Patrick is responsible for one of our favorite art instruction books in some time, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Oil Painting Techniques. It sports an intro by none other than Boris Vallejo. SCIOP. $24.95, your price $21.95. And even if you aren't an aspiring artist, its a treat just to see his work!
