News and Notes

Larry Lowery, the founder of the Big Little Book Club and the publisher of the Big Little Times, has passed away. Larry was also a professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley. He was affiliated with the Graduate School of Education for his research and with the Lawrence Hall of Science for his curriculum products. He wrote literally hundreds of books, including many childrens and educational books. In our world, his The Golden Age of Big Little Books remains the head-and-shoulders above the rest, best-book ever done on the subject.

We hope to be able to continue to offer this (we have just two in stock right now) if we can secure additional copies from his daughter, who is handling his estate. Unless someone steps in to maintain the club website and its products, including this book, I will try to keep it in print if I can work it out with the family. It’s produced as a print-on-demand book--full color and 460 pages of it!--just a few copies at a time. It has my highest recommendation.

Larry arranged for his complete--and I mean COMPLETE--Big Little Book collection to go to Hake’s Auctions. Larry was a good friend and a hard-working scholar, publishing the Big Little Times since 1983, and making available an amazing amount of data about all aspects of Big Little Books. At its peak, the club had 1400 members, each one assigned a number that corresponded to a Whitman BLB title. I already miss him.

Computer Issues Update
As I previously mentioned, we had a server crash on December 22. Although it’s taking us much more time to perform tasks by hand that were previously done electronically, we’re getting all orders out as usual. And we are bringing up a new software system to get all processes back up. For example, all customers have had to give us their full mailing information, which we used to have in their file, because that data was not available yet--we just got it and will have it online in the next few days.

The one major issue for us has been backorders--not regular orders, just advance orders for Coming Items and orders placed for out-of-stock items. These would have been placed by customers prior to December 22. Although we have these in data form, we’ve been unable to bring them up with all the correct payment information, shipping address, etc. so that we could send them out. So no items on backorder before December 22 were shipped. Now we have secured that data, so beginning January 19th, those backorders are being processed. We should have everything that's been received shipped in the next week or so.

I apologize for the delay with these. All the folks here, and two outside IT people, are working extremely hard to get us back up to speed.

Upcoming Book Shows
Anne and I will be exhibiting at the following shows:

Feb 4-5, 2017--Pasadena Book, Print, Photo and Paper Fair, Pasadena, California

Feb 10, 11, 12--50th California International Antiquarian Book Fair, Oakland, California

March 19--Los Angeles Vintage Paperback Collector’s Show, Glendale, California

March 25--Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair, Sacramento, California
